Numerological significance of 108

108 comes up a lot in Hinduism and Buddhism, among other traditions... But what is the actual significance of the number 108?

108 Upanisads, 108 japa beads, Krishna has 108 Gopis, Buddhist temples have 108 steps, Hindu Astrology has 12 Zodiacs and 9 Planets (12 X 9 = 108). WTF?
